WHAT IS FOWLERS SYNDROME
so iv been doing this blog for a while now and it came to me i actually havnt explained what fowlers syndrome is so in this blog i will do my best to tell you.
fowlers syndrome was first recognized by professor clare fowlers in 1985 until 1985 women in urinary retention was just thought to be hysterical .
so fowlers syndrome effects women in their 20s and 30s usually. who infrequently pass urine with an intermittent stream or for some like me full urinary retention.
normally when your bladder starts getting full you get the sensation to go to the toilet but a women with fowlers syndrome have little to no sensation of a full bladder and for me its no sensation in my blaader at all i havnt passed a drop in over 2 years.
symptoms
every women with fowlers syndrome has a variety with differnt severity of sympstoms.
some women like me suffer complete retention and others experience difficulty passing with residual amount of urine left in the bladder.
99% of women with fowlers suffer from utis ( urinary track infections ) due to the bladder not fully emptying.
now it says on the website some may experince some back and suprapubic pain but sadly most of us suffer with pain some like me have sever pain which leaves us stuck in bed at lot and requires very strong medications.
sadly the cause is still yet unknown.
treatment
sadly there is no cure but fowlers can be managed.
for women who can void normally with small residual volume of urine left over no intervention is needed.
for women retaining large amounts after going to the toilet can be taught to (isc) intermittent self catheterization to help.
and for women like me who have sever urinary retention we can try (sns) sacral nerve stimulation and for some it works brilliant but sadly for some of us it dosnt work and i am one of those it hasnt worked for.
many of us have cathetes eaither urethral or suprapubic i have a suprapubic catheter.
for some of us no treatment works and we are left with life changing surgical options like urostomy or mitrofanoff im currently waiting to see a specalist to talk about surgical options.
fowlers syndrome is a very rare condition that can not be cured and leaves many of us of many medications and bedbound and we are in so much pain and left unable to do daily activities.
AND ALL THIS IS BECAUSE OUR URETHRAL SPHINCTER IN OUR BLADDER IS UNABLE TO RELAX TO LET US URINATE
well there you go thats fowlers syndrome i hope this blog helps you understand fowlers
thank you for reading
